Tempranillo Monastrell '08
This 50/50 blend of the Spanish Tempranillo and Mourvedre, or Monastrell, is an unusual combination in historical terms, but one that works. The varieties are near each end of the ripening spectrum, the Tempranillo being our first variety to ripen, and Mourvedre one of the last along with Cabernet. Each variety is picked, fermented and matured separately before blending prior to bottling. The deeper darker fruit and firmer tannin backbone of Mourvedre is a perfect foil for the spicy vibrant Tempranillo. The combination results in a round, savoury, utterly food driven wine.
Medium hue brick red
Red berry fruit with savoury spicy edge, some charcuterie nuances – a combination of the spice of Tempranillo and the plummy Mourvedre.
Soft and round with savoury flavours of mocca and game dominant over the core of plummy fruit sweetness, moderate tannins.
Shorter to medium term, very approachable now, but should develop further suppleness with up to 5 years aging
