2022 Mencia

Having travelled to the mountainous and very old wine region around Leon in northwest Spain some years ago I fell in love with the vineyards and wines of the area, specifically Bierzo Mencia. The wines were so delicious I decided I had to give Mencia a try in Heathcote, even though our much lower altitude would mean warmer and drier growing conditions. Hoping the vines could adapt and I could capture at least some of those lovely characters, I managed to source some Mencia cuttings and we grafted about one acre (of Cabernet vines). It took a few years to learn how this relatively unknown variety performs but in 2022 we picked enough to make just 300 bottles. Perfumed lighter bodied with mineral tannin core structure. Enjoy now and for the next 10 years. Our natural process may produce a sediment and require decanting to maximise your enjoyment. Grown, made and bottled by the Dredge family.
